What Gives Long Haired German Shepherd Puppies Their Beautiful Coats?

by | May 6, 2013

Ever wonder what gives Long Haired German Shepherd Puppies their coats?

We wondered for a long time, but we’ve got the answer!

When we’re out with the puppies, people often stop us to ask about them. It’s not every day you see 5 German Shepherd Puppies going up a mountain together, after all. We definitely get the most questions about our Long Haired German Shepherd Puppies. Often, many of the emails we receive are inquiring about our Long Haired German Shepherd Puppies for sale.

The first thing we have to admit is that a German Shepherd having long hair is considered a flaw. We think it is a great flaw that creates absolutely stunning animals, but according to breed standard, it is considered a flaw. The gene that creates long haired German Shepherd Puppies is a recessive gene. So, in theory, we could breed our large German Shepherd Blue with another one of our standard coat dogs (like Emerald) and have a long-haired puppy come out. We would be thrilled!

So there’s your answer – Long Coat German Shepherd Puppies simply got the recessive gene.

German Shepherd Puppies don’t always look exactly like their parents. For instance, Blue’s dad is an all white German Shepherd Dog. He is absolutely stunning, but half of his puppies do not come out white. Can we breed only long haired German Shepherd Puppies? The short answer is yes, we could probably get it down to where nearly every puppy came out with long hair.

We’re not going to do that, though. We don’t want to mess with nature that much. Our largest concern as German Shepherd Breeders is making sure that we breed healthy dogs that will live long, happy lives with their families. We screen our dogs elbows and hips with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals to make sure that they are not likely to pass on hip dysplasia.

Some would call Hazel’s beautiful long hair a breed flaw – we certainly don’t think it is a flaw!
