How to Decide What To Feed Your Dog – 4 Things to Consider When Picking Out Dog Food For Your Puppy – German Shepherd Puppy Breeder – German Shepherd Dogs in Alaska

We hope you started by reading our blog post on 10 things you should consider before buying a puppy and decided that one of our German Shepherd Puppies for Sale was for you. Now what?

Well, we can guarantee one thing – your new German Shepherd Puppy is going to want to eat! The below information will help you decide what to feed your new puppy, but remember, this information is not just for owners of large German Shepherd Dogs, but for all dog breeds. Food plays into maintaining a healthy weight, their bone health, their teeth health and your wallet health!

Deciding what to feed them can be a daunting task! Here are 4 things to consider when picking out dog food for your puppy!

There are 4 main areas to consider when picking out dog foods.

1. Size of Your Puppy’s Breed – Because we breed Large German Shepherd Puppies, we immediately go to the large breed section of the dog food aisle, as it is very important to take size in to consideration. There are two general categories in which food is sold: small breed and large breed. The difference between the nutritional value of these two isn’t what’s important here, its things like kibble size in regards to chewing and choking for your puppy, or the density and shape of the kibble for healthy interaction with their teeth – chipped or broken teeth are no fun for your dog and clean teeth makes everyone happy! Remember though, choose based on the final size of your adult dog… your 20lb German Shepherd puppy is still a “large breed”.

2. Age of your Puppy – Because we breed Long Haired German Shepherd Puppies, we have a range of ages of dogs living with us. We always have both puppy and adult food on hand, and will need to consider senior appropriate food as some of ours go in to retirement. Getting this right is probably the most important one in terms of keeping up your dog’s overall health. The nutrients needed throughout the dog’s stages of life vary depending on what they’re doing. As a puppy, they need food formulated for growth, as an adult they need food formulated to maintain a healthy weight and nutrition, and as a senior they need additional supplements to keep they’re joints and bones healthy, while maintaining a healthy weight. Remember though, the right food doesn’t guarantee a healthy weight, you need to make sure you’re feeding them the right amount!

3. Health Conditions / Concerns / Known Issues – Every dog owner knows their puppy best! We pay a lot of attention to our dog’s health, since we breed German Shepherd Puppies in Alaska. We know that one of our girls has a sensitive stomach, and another one blows her coat more than the rest every spring. Foods high in wheat, beef or dairy can cause “food intolerance” and fatty acids and vitamins will help keep their skin and coats soft and shiny! Your dog may have allergies that lead you towards one type or another.

4. Cost – When looking at dog foods, it is important to pick one that meets your financial needs as well. Pick a brand/type that you’ll be able to afford on a monthly basis because you want to stay consistent with the food your puppy is getting, and not buying whatever is on sale each week. Consistently changing could cause under eating, over eating or upset stomachs!
