Dogs Are All Love – When You Get The Right One.

by | May 2, 2013

It’s COLD in Alaska and we need all of the puppy love we can get!

The good news is, we have plenty of dogs to give us love. It’s true. Dogs are all love.

There’s something special and heartwarming about spooning with a 100-lb German Shepherd Puppy. Luckily none of the dogs can read, so I can safely write on here that I am probably the closest with Blue, our Large German Shepherd Male. Since day 1, when he came into our house wide-eyed and big-eared, he hasn’t left my side. Blue has brought serious joy to my life.

This is Blue on his first day with us! Look at those EARS!

From time to time, it can get a little stressful running a kennel. It’s like 6 kids that want your attention all at the same time but you cannot reason with them. (I’ve never had children – can you reason with them?) There are those moments when the last thing I want near me is a dog, believe it or not. It’s those moments that I take Blue for a walk – just the two of us. That’s the crazy part, when the last thing I want near me is a dog, I go get Blue. He is my friend.

One of the cool things Blue does (besides being an awesome cribbage assistant) is that he responds to “friend.” I think his recall rate for “friend” is probably higher than his name. Presumably, that’s because when I am upset with him, I never call him “friend,” and am more likely to use his real name – part of which is Blue Duck. That’s a story for another time.

This is why it is so important that you get the right puppy. Blue’s breeder, Emily, did a great job of interviewing me on what I was looking forward to in a companion and got me the right one. Three members of our pack have been from Emily and they are all awesome. Curiously, I had called Emily for an all black puppy that they had on their website and ended the call with Blue on his way to me. This is a sign of a good German Shepherd Breeder, they get you the right puppy. Pay attention to that when you’re talking to breeder’s.

Emily took the time to make sure that she was getting me the right dog – and I am so grateful I listened.

Here’s what I’m getting at: wait. Wait until you find the right breeder with the right puppy at the right time. Don’t get the first puppy yousee that is adorable. You could end up miserable with the wrong dog. Take your time. Find a breeder that seems interested in getting you the right puppy, not just getting you a puppy.

One of the greatest benefits of Blue is that he is a great cribbage assistant!

We really do believe that dogs are all love. If you ever want help finding a good breeder or picking out the right puppy, even if you aren’t buying a puppy from us, feel free to contact us. You don’t even have to be looking for a German Shepherd, you could be looking for a Golden Retriever or asking for tips on what to look for when you go to your local dog shelter for a rescue.

At Far North Kennel, Theresa and I strive to be the most ethical breeders of German Shepherd Puppies that you can find. We are always happy to help you with training questions, behavior problems, or anything else dog related. It is our true desire that you have the right dog for you, even if it is not a German Shepherd Puppy. After all, our dogs are all love in our lives and we know that yours can be too!
